Hastings District Council recognises its responsibilities and the importance of providing a healthy and safe workplace and is committed to the protection of its employees, members of the public and its property from harm or damage.
Hazard Reporting
Council and its employees have a responsibility for identifying and controlling hazards. Reporting hazards gives us the opportunity of eliminating, isolating or minimizing the risk to staff and in doing so continually improves the safety of our workplace.
Training
Council promotes the upskilling of staff in health and safety. Training is co-ordinated through the human resources team.
Accident Reporting
All accidents and near misses must be reported and investigated. This again, gives us the opportunity to continually improve the safety of our workplace.
Rehabilitation
Council with assistance from ACC encourages the safe and early return to work of injured employees for both work and non work related injuries. An ACC case manager works along side the injured employee and Council to a create a Rehabilitation Plan.
A rehabilitation plan has three parts – Vocational (work), Medical (health) and Social (daily living activities). It may mean an employee returning to their own job but with reduced task or working in a completely different area of Council. The benefits of continuing working is a positive one and it is always part of the plan to assist an employee to return to their normal life and work as quickly as possible.
Health and Safety Committee
Council has a Health and Safety committee that meet quarterly and is made up of representatives from all work areas of Council. Their role is to represent staff in health and safety issues and to assist with the ongoing requirements of health and safety policies, procedures and legislative.
