This week is Māori Language Week and the
Hastings District Libraries are celebrating this is various ways. If
you visit the library you may hear te reo over the loud-speaker, waiata
being sung and you may see more bilingual signs.
Raranga Atu (Weave On) Exhibition
- until 11 August.
In Hastings Library, with some items being displayed also
in Havelock North & Flaxmere Libraries. Some wonderful raranga art from
various artists - well worth a visit.

Displays - celebrating te reo in all
three libraries. Waiata -
performed at Hastings Library by Council's Te Reo students on Friday 25
July at noon.
Māori
Language Week
is an ideal time to make a commitment to learning one of New
Zealands official languages te reo
Māori.
Hastings Central Library has many resources to offer first-time
learners, such as language tuition books, cassette and video sets,
and dictionaries at adult and junior level.

Montana Book Awards |
|
The Montana Book Awards have been announced.
The Montana Medal for Fiction or Poetry went to Charlotte Grimshaw for
Opportunity, and the Montana Medal for Non-fiction went to Janet Hunt
for Wetlands of New Zealand.

To celebrate Montana Poetry Day
Hastings Library held a poetry competition.
Winners this competition>>
Flaxmere Library held a poetry reading cafe style, with public and
staff sharing their poems. This was such a enjoyable occasion that it may
become a regular event.

Language Line |

Hastings District Libraries are now participating in Language Line, along with the Hastings District Council.
Language Line allows clients with little or no
English to ask for a telephone interpreter.
