• Talking books are
available primarily, but not exclusively, to people who, through
physical disability, e.g. poor sight or motor skills, are unable to use
printed material.
• The majority of the collection is fiction, arranged in author
alphabetical order. Spine labels clearly mark romance, mysteries,
westerns, sci-fi, thrillers and humour.
• Non-fiction books include biographies, travel, animals and country
life. These are arranged in Dewey Classification order.
• Because of the high cost involved, only popular authors and subjects
are produced in Talking Book format.
• Few New Zealand titles are published in talking book form. The
fern-leaf spine label shows these.
• Each library has a core collection of Talking Books. The Havelock
North and Flaxmere collections are supplemented by short term exchanges
from the Hastings Central collection.
• Some Talking Books are available on CD & DVD, especially
classic literature.
• The National Library's Audio Book Service for People with
Disabilities, which is based in Palmerston North, supplements our
collection for exclusively print disabled readers. Ask for the
Community Librarian to access these. |
