Cemeteries and Crematorium

Home : Community Services : Cemeteries and Crematorium

The Hastings District Council oversees four cemeteries in the District - Hastings Cemetery, Havelock North Cemetery, Mangaroa Cemetery and Puketapu Cemetery - as well as the Hawke's Bay Crematorium, which is situated at the Hastings Cemetery.

Records of burials and cremations at the four cemeteries can now be found using our online cemetery records database.

The database was developed by the Council's GIS team and took over one year to collate all of the information.

The cemeteries and crematorium are open for services and burials from 8.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday. The Sexton's office is located at the Hastings Cemetery and is open Monday - Friday generally between 9.00am and 4.30pm. Due to the nature of the Sexton's role he is not always present.

The Puketapu Cemetery is a small rural cemetery used by local people for two or three burials per year.

Future burial plots are available at all four of the district's cemeteries but are not available for pre-purchasing at Hastings or Havelock North cemeteries. Cremation plots are available at Hastings, Mangaroa and Havelock North cemeteries.

Crematorium Open Day

The Hastings Crematorium has been opening its doors to the public since 2002. The open days are an opportunity for the public to see just what happens at the crematorium.

The next open day is Sunday October 14 2007.

Hastings Crematorium and Chapel

The crematorium is owned by the Hastings District Council, but services the whole of Hawke’s Bay from Wairoa to Waipukurau. It is located in the Hastings Cemetery grounds, Orchard Road, and houses a chapel for funeral services and offices for Council's Sexton, Steve Hibberd, and the cemetery staff.

The crematorium has been modernised over recent years with a new cremator installed, a negative pressure ventilation system in the ash processing room, and general improvements to the work area.

The crematorium has some interesting history behind it; built 1943/44. The first cremation took place on 15 December 1944, and as of July 2007 close to 27,000 cremations have taken place at the facility.

Plans for the building were prepared by Davis and Phillips and the tender let to H.N Abbott. The building was erected by many of the regions’ people for 6925 pounds.

Improvements to the building have included a Major HC-90 LPG Fired Cremator priced at $429,500, which replaced the original cremator in 1999.
