Community think tank (CTT)

Feedback on the ideas will be given to the community via leaflet drop to their letterboxes again. The results of the CTT are tabled below as the community members presented it. It is not prioritised. Care must be taken not to measure the popularity of projects by the amount of stickers that it received. Many people just voted for one or two projects and not others. Others went through the whole list and had an opinion on everything. Most important is that members from the community put it up themselves and they were empowered by the participation process. The following key indicates whether projects have and economic (including infrastructure), social or environmental nature.

No
Idea for project
Discussion/Rationale
Nature of project
1 Repair footpaths The state of the footpaths (Huia St was mentioned specifically) was deemed as dangerous for especially the elderly and people were forced to walk with a torch by night. Economic
2 Beautify the district/ Tidy up Kiwi Place “The place needs colour” was the general consensus on this. Environmental
3 Courtesy Some good manners will not go amiss, especially with young children. Social
4 Make sign for welcome between Kiwi St & Lowe St and at Stoneycroft entrance – designed and painted by Camberley kids It needs to be a solid structure. People need to feel welcome when they enter the area. The community is hidden. Environmental
5 Flowers under the trees to enhance Orchard Road – non poisonous The daffodils bloom in spring, but the rest of the year there is no colour there. The non-poisonous request was made based on the existing poisonous oleander trees planted there. Environmental
6 After-school activities for 5-13 year olds, weekend and holidays This was done in the area before, but stopped. Older children were also mentioned as a target group. Social
7 Extend jungle gym – slide/swings/seesaw - repaint This needs some swings, also for toddlers and “wow, look at that!” colours. Let the kids help paint the jungle gym, taking ownership. It is very drab as it stands. Economic
8 Skateboard formal area/ lighting there An adult put up the idea. Let the kids design and paint it. It can be combined with bike tracks. There must be lighting for night skating. 502 Records are willing to help manage it. Economic
9 Information – WINZ officer, CAB Not a permanent presence, it is important for people to know that a local (Hastings) person answers the phone or speak to them. The Apostolic Church (currently renting the consultation space) was willing to share their space. Social
10 502 Records – regular events They want to do regular events (brought Nesian Mystik here last year). They are not a registered legal entity. Social
11 Feed our children – feed their tummies to feed their brains This idea generated a lot of discussion, also about milk in schools and then it was taken out by the National Government. “Who should do it?” was the question. Social
12 “No spitting” signs The person who suggested this was concerned about the spread of illnesses like meningitis. The opposition said it would not stop spitting just because there are signs up. Economic
13 Patrolling by police re speed/community policeman/judder bars in Kiwi St/ongoing security This suggestion grew during the week. The speed factor was the biggest complaint, especially in Kiwi Street. People lose their pets and several concerns were raised about the safety of children in the street. Judder bars or traffic slowing measures (higher than those in Lowe Street). Ongoing security in the area would be good, but not by a policeman who does not understand the young people. Social
14 Roaming dogs (off the street) One person said she preferred to walk later at night when there were not so many dogs around. Social
15 Community hall- youth venue i.e. @tomic centre The idea of a gathering place certainly had support. Some people judged other ideas solely on the basis of an available hall/venue. Economic
16 Free transport to @tomic for youth groups This can be done if there is a central pick-up point in Camberley. The @tomic is already doing a run to Flaxmere and could pick the youth of Camberley up on their way. Social
17 Rubbish bins – recycling- bottles The bins in the area need to be bigger and recycling bins would be an advantage.
18 Community gardens - vegetables Read with the community foodbank idea Social
19 Decorations/Xmas Events and New Years The area needs more colour around Christmas and New Year (i.e. like the flags in Flaxmere and a parade). In general terms the promoter suggested that the annual Blossom parade be pushed further two weeks and be combined with a Christmas parade. Environmental
20 Family outings/trips away from the area. Family days and picnics in the park. Social
21 Community foodbank and clothes This is a need in the community. The Apostolic Church has a presence in the consultation space twice a week and would be willing to co-ordinate this. They are already selling 2nd hand clothes. Social
22 Bike tracks – racing-tricks This idea was put forward by a young person, but also widely supported by adults. This could form part of the skate park. Some people were worried about the safety of skaters with bicycles around them. Economic
23 Lighting (safety) This was mentioned in connection with high trees cutting off light from street lamps (in Kiwi Street) as well as mentioned in general. There was some uncertainty whether the trees were Council’s or homeowners’. Economic
24 Plunket Although the suggestion was made, various people said that the Plunket nurse visited them in their home anyway and that they do not need a more permanent presence. Social
25 Alleyway off Kiwi St – YUK, lighting The alleyway was a bone of contention. People used it, but were not impressed with the filthy state of it. The safety aspect of using it at night also came up since the lighting was deemed inadequate. The high walls of the alley seemed to make people feel unsafe. Environmental
26 Neighbourhood support This suggestion was met with comments such as “that should be common sense”, but no one felt so strong about it to lead a group. Social

27
Murals on changing sheds This idea was widely supported, also by grown ups. Once again the “colour” theme came into play. Environmental
28 Basketball court The school currently have some basketball equipment that people practise on, but people felt they needed something more permanent. Economic
29 Gym The young people raised this idea. The Taiwhenua O Heretaunga in Heretaunga Street has a gym and could be a stakeholder in supporting the Camberley community on this. Economic
30 Covered bus shelter This should be just by the shops. There is a covered bus shelter higher up, but the residents of Kiwi Street do get wet in the rain. Economic
31 Morning market The park could be used for this. This idea generated very positive feedback. Social
32 Internet café The main request here was more for a computer for public use, rather than a whole café. Social
33 Coffee mornings for elderly Getting together on a social basis was the idea behind this. The church is once again willing to help out. The opposition against the idea was that “everyone can afford coffee, you don’t need to give us some”. Social
34 Another kindy A young mum put this up. She is new to the area and her son is on a waiting list, but she also needs to work. Economic
35 Softball diamond Camberley school is the regional champion in softball. Equipment or a designated zone for softball in the park would ensure that kids playing it do not have to go to Akina for practice. Economic
36 Sewerage drain cleaning in Kiwi Place Apparently this is an old issue, which had been raised before, and attempts to repair it have been executed before, but the problem persists. Economic

Analysis of Results

Economic (incl. Infrastructure) Social Environmental
13 16 7
  • The biggest proportion of the ideas is of a social nature. This means that the delivery on these will not only be the responsibility of Council, but other stakeholders and key role players in the community. Council might be the facilitator and lead agency, but strong maintenance is needed from all parties to make any project successful, however big or small. Some of these projects will be one-off events.
  • The projects in the economic field are grouped together because of their capital input and value. It might be an environmental outcome for the community, but the Council will have to invest capital or project funding into it. Planning for these projects will be long term and have to be aligned with other Council priorities, needs and budgetary constraints.
  • The environmental projects are ones that could be executed over either a long – or short-term period. This provides ample opportunity for community participation, like competitions for young people and also for input from other stakeholders and role players. This is one area of the project for which there is some immediately accessible funding in the budget.
