The Hastings District Plan is a legal document which sets
out the Hastings District Council's policies and strategies
for managing the effects of the use, development and protection
of the natural and physical resources of the district now
and in the future.
The Resource Management Act 1991(RMA),
requires local authorities to produce district plans to work
towards achieving the purpose of the Act which is 'to promote
the sustainable management of natural and physical resources'.
The Hastings District Plan became operative Tuesday 10 June 2003, after almost six years of consultation.
The District Plan was first proposed in 1997 after a long period of drafting and consultation. 232 submissions were received raising over 1700 individual issues.
A further 170 people lodged submissions in support or opposition to these submissions. The Council's Hearings Committee then heard these submissions to the Proposed District Plan and decisions were issued in July 2000.
The District Plan imposes various methods, including rules,
to control the effects of activities and development within
the district.
The District Plan is made up of a written document and a set
of planning maps.
