The current drought is not the first, nor will it be the last drought to hit farmers on the east coast of New Zealand. While droughts affect every farmer directly, some survive, recover and prosper better and more quickly than others. Over the years there has been much written about why this may be so. It seems timely to remind those involved so the farming industry can collectively improve its strength. This website provides information on the types of assistance available and where to go to get help. It looks at how to get through the current conditions. And it gives some advice from the perspective of an accountant, a rural vet and Work and Income (WINZ). New: Drought information hand-out #2 August 2007 (PDF 1MB)
Supported by: Message from Lawrence YuleThe 2007 Regional Drought Committee has been brought together to coordinate a response to the current drought. Farmers and service providers such as banks, accountants, Work and Income, IRD, stock agents, MAF and vets are represented on the committee. These are the people who can help us get through the current situation and to recover when the situation improves. Two Agricultural Recovery Facilitators have been appointed to help farmers make decisions about the best actions to take in reponse to the drought. The co-ordinators are well-resourced in terms of knowing where to get different assistance and they are being supported by experienced farmers who are co-ordinating any available feed supplies. Although we have had some rain in the last week the situation is still serious. The drought will affect not simply farmers but contractors such as fencers and shearers as well. There are many places to get support and assistance of all types - you just need to let someone know. There is no doubt the current drought in Hawke’s Bay is creating big challenges for farmers. Drought can be the most insidious of all climate-driven challenges farmers face. In the 25 years I have been farming here in Hawke’s Bay this is the worst drought I’ve been through. It is vital for the wellbeing of all of us that we stay strong, continue to make clear, bold business decisions, help our friends and neighbours and realise when it is time to ask for help ourselves.
