Te Awanga, Parkhill & Clifton : Flooding

The Hawke's Bay Regional Council (HBRC) is developing a programme of flood protection works aimed at protecting the Te Awanga/Haumoana area from flooding associated with the Maraetotara and Tuki Tuki Rivers. HBRC has already constructed stopbanks in Haumoana on the Tuki Tuki River between Haumoana Road and Grange Creek. While these works will protect residences from flooding caused by the bursting of river banks, they are not designed to protect low-lying properties from sea inundation caused by storm surges. |

Flood protection works on the Maraetotara River mean that most of the urban part of Te Awanga is protected from a 1 in 100 year flood. However, properties in the vicinity of the Haggarty and Leyland Drains are still at risk from flooding in heavy rain events.
Flood hazards on the Clifton side of the Maraetotara River still need to be investigated. These flood protection works in effect mean that the area of land susceptible to flooding in Haumoana and Te Awanga is likely to be reduced, increasing the potential for future land development.
