The Hastings District and Hawke's Bay Regional councils formed a joint working party to address coastal issues in the vicinity of the Haumoana and Te Awanga communities. This followed severe coastal erosion and flooding that occurred after the storms and big swells in April 2002.

Recent projects include planting to stabilise beach erosion, and restricted vehicle access to the beach crest to prevent damage to coastal vegetation. Signs have been erected to raise awareness of the planting project and assist in the campaign to minimise erosion.

Beachfront residents have been active in the planting project with plants and advice provided by the local councils.

The working party will continue to oversee progress of the current approach and integrate outcomes of other projects to ensure viable management options for the two coastal communities.
