Our Coast

Home : Environment : Our Coast

The Hastings District has approximately 75km of coastline situated on the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island. Use the links above to access information about particular areas of coast within the Hastings District.

Our coast has many different beach forms, for example the sandy beaches of Waimarama and Ocean Beach, the shingle beaches at Tangoio and Haumoana and areas of hard coast, such as Cape Kidnappers.

There are numerous river outfalls and associated wetlands and lagoons, particularly in the central Hastings coast adjacent to the Heretaunga Plains.

Te Awanga Beach

Across these various environments different physical processes influence beach morphology and as a result the natural and physical resources. For example, many areas of the coast are currently eroding, with erosion rates as high as 1m/yr (e.g. Clifton), while other areas are slowly accreting. Those coastal environments with river mouths are also often subject to flooding and adjacent flat lands and valleys to inundation (for example Haumoana, Waitangi/Ngaruroro and Aropaoanui).

Our coast has significant cultural, recreation and heritage values. These values require careful and comprehensive planning. The Hastings Coastal Environment Strategy (HCES) has emerged in response to this demand.

Coastal Structure Plans

The Hastings District Council is currently developing coastal structure plans:

The 20-year Plans aim to manage coastal residential expansion, reserves and parks, services including water, stormwater and wastewater (sewage), roads, walkways and cycleways as well as beautification of the individual coastal communities.

What area do the coastal plans cover?

Waimarama

Haumoana, Te Awanga, Parkhill and Clifton
