: Campbell to speak for Opera House fundraiser

US Open Golf champ Michael Campbell is to speak at Te Awa Winery next Tuesday (17 January) as a fundraiser for the upgrade of the Hawke’s Bay Opera House.
138 tickets have been sold to the evening which includes a three course dinner & speech by the golf champion. The tickets are $200 per head and there are just 22 left.
A US Open flag and Presidents Cup Flag, both signed by Campbell, will be auctioned on the night along with other Campbell paraphernalia. The auction will be ‘silent’ whereby people place bids in envelopes.
Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule, who leads the Opera House fundraising committee, said today having Michael Campbell speak at a fundraising dinner was a huge coup.
“He was going to be in town anyway and we’re hugely grateful that he is giving up his time to help our fundraising efforts. We’ve got a lot of keen golfers and Campbell fans in the Bay so we knew it would never be a problem getting bums on seats.”
Mr Yule said the generosity of people during the fundraising process continued to amaze him.
“Our fundraising target for the Opera House was huge but we’re dwindling that down. People believe in the facility and why shouldn’t they? With the renovations looking absolutely incredible, the facility is going to bring a lot of good business into this region.”
The Hawke’s Bay Opera House is undergoing a multi million dollar renovation. It has included a complete overhaul of the theatre as well the building of a new entry plaza. The official opening weekend, which is being called “Acting Up”, is just over two months away. It will be held between 24 and 26 March.
The weekend extravaganza will see locals taking in free shows and concerts put on by theatre, music and school groups.
