Hastings District Council going from good to great
The Hastings District Council has commissioned an independent report to ensure resources are correctly matched to the Council’s long term objectives, detailed in the Long Term Council Community Plan 2006-2016.
Although the report’s findings conclude the Council is doing very well, particularly considering the significant community growth pressures, it outlines three key areas where improvements can be made.
The report recommends establishing a more centralised customer service centre; some structural changes in the areas of parks and libraries; and, improved human resource practices, better aligned to today’s market place.
The report also recommends strengthening Council’s infrastructure and project management functions. This is particularly relevant in the engineering and planning skills areas where there is a national and international shortage.
Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule said some of the changes within management are being undertaken immediately, while other changes will require further input and consideration from the Council.
“It has been quite clear over the past two years that the significant growth in the district has added new pressures. It is important we have an organisation that is effective, efficient and fit for purpose. This review suggests some changes to enhance our overall performance and we intend to implement them.”
“The Council’s current wage and salary cost is about $14 million per annum and so any improvements we can make to ensure we’re getting the very best from our investment is going to benefit the Council and its core business,” said Mr Yule.
