: Total fire ban for Hastings District
A total fire ban covering the Hastings District has been extended at least until Friday 6 January, after five fires kept rural fire crews on their toes on Monday.
Four of the fires yesterday were deliberately lit, despite a total fire ban being in place.
Gale force winds and high temperatures, similar to the conditions aggravating large fires in Australia, are predicted for the region for the rest of the week.
The total fire ban prohibits the lighting of any fires outdoors, including rubbish burn-offs and campfires.
Hastings District Council Emergency Management Officer Paul Hawke said anyone who had lit fires in the past month should go back and check they were thoroughly out, as strong winds could re-ignite fires smouldering underground.
The total fire ban will continue until 8pm Friday, when it will either be continued or a restricted fire season introduced.
