: Fire season may come early
1 September 2006
The rapid spread of several large vegetation fires during the past week, despite heavy rainfall several weeks ago, has Hastings Rural Fire Officers warning the public that fire restrictions may come early this year.
Paul Hawke, Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer for the Hastings District Council, said gale-force winds often herald the return of spring as the weather slowly changes to summer.
The strong equinox winds can spread burning sparks from fires and can rekindle embers from any previous fires which have not been properly extinguished. Last year some fires were rekindled by the wind as long as six months after they were lit. Fires can smoulder underground for months before being fanned back into flame.
Mr Hawke said people should check the weather forecast before lighting any outdoor fires, and avoid lighting fires when strong winds are predicted. He said Rural Fire Officers were happy to advise anybody who was unsure about whether to light a fire.
Spring is also a good time to check driveway access is clear for large fire appliances in the event of an emergency, and that rural water tanks are kept full for fire fighting purposes. The fitting of correct water tank couplings will also help the quick attachment of fire hoses.
Power lines also need to be kept clear of tree branches to prevent any fires through electrical sparks or broken live wires. Loose rubbish and tree prunings should be cleared now as fire restrictions are likely to be put in place in the coming months.
