Severe wind warning means greater risk of fire

Home : News : Severe wind warning means greater risk of fire

12 October 2006

Wind gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour are likely over the next two days bringing heightened risk of fire, warns Hastings District Council Emergency Management Officer Rene Londeman.

Fire risk signs will be moved to ‘high’ as the high winds continue through to the weekend.

Recent burn-offs may add to the concern as high winds can reignite fires. Smouldering fires can continue burning for many months underground adding to the danger. In extreme wind conditions the risk of fires spreading is even greater.

People noticing fires should call 111 immediately. If the public have any concerns about the fire risk or the severe weather warning they should call Hastings District Council on (06) 8780500.
