Havelock tavern gets 1-day suspension for underage liquor sales

1 May

A Havelock North tavern will have its liquor licence suspended for a day next month as a penalty for selling alcohol to underage teens.

A combined operation by Police, the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board and Hastings District Council staff in November 2005 caught the Happy Tav selling liquor to two minors.

The Liquor Licensing Authority will suspend the tavern’s liquor licence for 24 hours from 7.00 am on Friday 26 May. The tavern’s bottle store, which was closed for a day after a similar operation last year, is not affected by this suspension.

Hastings District Council’s Community Safety Manager, Malcom Hart, said checks of licensed premises would continue and focus on patrons’ levels of intoxication, as well as the ability of underage teens to obtain alcohol.
