Large landfill valley opens
14 December
The first stage of a $12 million extension to the Omarunui Landfill is to open tomorrow (Friday 15). The large “Valley D” engineering project will eventually hold 1.75 million cubic metres of rubbish, enough for an estimated 12 years of use.

A Citizenship Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, 13 December 2006 at 7.00pm in the Council Chamber. There will be 30 candidates who will officially become citizens of New Zealand that evening.

Hastings District Council has decided it will look for a new approach to managing the Hawke’s Bay Exhibition Centre. It will no longer fund the Hawke’s Bay Cultural Trust to operate the Exhibition Centre from June 2007.

Hastings District is likely to move into a restricted fire season on Monday 27 November, Rural Fire Officers warn. Summer is the traditional ‘busy season’ for fire crews, and several recent rural property fires suggest this year will be no different.

Site of landfill fire no longer a risk

New Zealand Fire Service and Hastings District Council are working together to extinguish and bury burnt materials from a fire at the Omarunui landfill in Hastings, to mitigate risk of re-ignition and disperse any fumes which may emanate from the site. Currently there is no smoke at all coming from the site of the fire.
