3 October

Hastings District Council will open an information booth in Hastings’ central business district to give Hastings voters an opportunity to get all the facts on the Nelson Park proposal ahead of the public referendum.

The Nelson Park information booth will be open in the Hastings i-site on the corner of Heretaunga and Russell Streets.

The booth will be open from Friday 6th October until Saturday 14th October, from 10am to 2pm.

Hastings District Mayor Lawrence Yule said the booth is an important part of making information on Nelson Park as accessible as possible.

“We want to encourage Hastings people to visit us at the booth and ask any questions they might have before they vote in the referendum.  People are talking about Nelson Park and that’s good, we want to make sure people have the facts.”

The booth will be staffed by Hastings District Council officers.  Full information on the Nelson Park proposal and referendum will be available.  A fly-through of the sports and recreation park proposed for Percival Road will also be on show.

Hastings District Council is holding the public referendum to decide whether to sell Nelson Park and the adjoining part of Caroline Road for a large format retail development and to apply the net proceeds of the sale to:

  1. The establishment of a replacement all-weather athletics track, together with a 1000-seat covered grandstand and associated facilities, as part of a regional sports and recreation park on land owned by the Council in Percival Road; and,
  2. The purchase and development of public open space in the Hastings Central Business District (CBD) to the value of at least $3 million.

Voting papers will be delivered to all Hastings District electors between 19 th and 24 October.

Voting closes at noon on 9th November.
