Parks staff warn irrigation guns are not toys

Hastings District Council Parks staff were dismayed at being criticised by parents after warning a group of children away from a high-pressure irrigation gun in Kirkpatrick Park on Monday.

The children had pushed the gun over, damaging both the playing field surface and the gun itself while putting themselves at risk.

Parks Foreman Chris Looij said the guns pumped out water at very high pressure, enough to cause injury if a child was hit directly in the face. They also contained moving parts which would not halt if a finger became caught in them.

"These irrigation guns are not toys. Children will naturally want to run in and out of the water where it falls onto the field surface, but parents should make sure they stay well away from the gun itself."

Mr Thompson said the guns would be removed from some parks until the end of the school holidays next week.
