Home : News : Large landfill valley opens

14 December 2006
The first stage of a $12 million extension to the Omarunui Landfill is to open tomorrow (Friday 15). The large “Valley D” engineering project will eventually hold 1.75 million cubic metres of rubbish, enough for an estimated 12 years of use.
Tomorrow’s opening marks the completion of the first and largest stage, at a cost of around $7 million.
The new landfill valley, which was approved in December 2004 and started in April 2005, consists of a large excavated valley lined with layers of clay, compacted earth, drainage material and plastic membrane. The protective layers are designed to stop gases and liquids produced by the rubbish leaking into the soil or water below the landfill site.
Gas given off by the rubbish will eventually be collected and used to generate energy.
Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule and Napier Mayor Barbara Arnott will officially open the valley at 1.30pm tomorrow, as the first load of rubbish is delivered. Media are invited to attend.
