New Zealand Fire Service and Hastings District Council are working together to extinguish and bury burnt materials from a fire at the Omarunui landfill in Hastings, to mitigate risk of re-ignition and disperse any fumes which may emanate from the site.
The fire service is continuing with foam application as well as working with two diggers to bury what remains of the fire damaged materials.
It is anticipated operations will be concluded by mid-afternoon today.
Currently there is no smoke at all coming from the site of the fire which started in a waste pit at the landfill at around 3.30pm yesterday.
A spokesperson for the New Zealand Fire Service said the site of the fire no longer posed a risk however representatives of the Fire Service and the Hastings District Council would remain at the landfill for the rest of the day to monitor the situation.
Anyone with health concerns they feel could be attributed to the fire, such as coughing, watery eyes or sore throat, should contact their doctor or the hospital emergency department.
