21 July 2006

Severe weather has forced the closure of a section of Ocean Beach Road. The area is dangerous and under no circumstances should people attempt to access it.

The section of Ocean Beach Road from Haupouri farm track to the beach was closed to all users by the Hastings District Council at 4pm yesterday. Severe settlement has occurred on the road as a result of recent rain.

Barriers are in place at both ends of the affected section of Ocean Beach Road to warn motorists of the danger and to prevent access. Hastings District Council’s Infrastructure Manager, Murray Foreman said it is vital road users adhere to the signs blocking off the closed road. “This is about safety fundamentally. The weather has made the road very dangerous,” he said.

Alternative access through private land has been provided for residents. The alternative route is being managed by the Hastings District Council and will be maintained by Council contractors.

The affected section of road requires significant repair work which will take some time to complete. “Until the weather settles done and we get the chance to inspect the site safely we are unable to give a timeframe for reopening that section of Ocean Beach Road,” said Mr Foreman.
