: Opera House opening draws thousands
27 March
An early taste of winter weather was unable to put a dampener on the opening of the Hawke’s Bay Opera House over the weekend, with more than 10,000 people taking the opportunity to tour the newly-refurbished theatre and plaza.
Prime Minister Helen Clark officially opened the Opera House on Friday, praising the work which had gone into the redevelopment.
That was followed by the announcement of a $500,000 donation to the project from the Cushing Family.
Opera House Manager Craig Goodall said he was delighted at the news.
“This is a wonderful boost towards our fundraising target. There has been so much support form the community for this redevelopment, and I’ve heard nothing but praise for the way it has turned out. The theatre is a venue any city would be proud to have, and the new plaza is just stunning.”
He said the Hastings District Council also had also lodged an application for government funding of up to $2.5million, the outcome of which would be announced mid-year.
