Nelson Park referendum set for November

21 August 2006
Hastings District Council today voted to proceed with a referendum to decide whether to sell Nelson Park and the adjoining part of Caroline Road for a large format retail development, and to apply the net proceeds of the sale to:
1. The establishment of a replacement all-weather athletics track, together with a 1000-seat covered grandstand and associated facilities, as part of a regional sports and recreation park on land owned by the Council in Percival Road; and,
2. The purchase and development of public open space in the Hastings Central Business District to the value of at least $3 million. The proposal will only proceed if the projected proceeds of the sale are sufficient to cover the estimated costs of the work proposed.
Public Notice of the referendum will be given on Wednesday, 23 August. The preliminary electoral roll to be used for the referendum will be available for inspection from Wednesday, 23 August during ordinary opening hours at the Hastings District Council Civic Administration Buildings and at the Hastings District Libraries.
The electoral roll will close on Wednesday, 20 September and polling will close at 12 noon on Thursday, 9 November.
