Street trees feeling the heat

Residents in Hastings district are being encouraged to water their street trees to help revive them from sweltering summer temperatures.

Hastings District Council Horticultural Officer Bruce Allport said today the Council’s parks staff were watering street trees with water tankers, but were struggling to keep up with the required supply to all trees.

The problem is exacerbated through the warm temperatures and strong winds which is drying out the soil. Residents could help out hugely with a couple of buckets of water each week.

"If someone lives on a street with a tree outside their house, then one or two buckets of water per week while it’s hot would be a huge help,” said Mr Allport.

"Our parks staff are doing what they can but with the number of trees showing signs of dryness they are finding it difficult to get to all trees with sufficient water to keep them alive”.

Mr Allport said it was encouraging to receive calls from concerned residents who had taken the time to assist and encourage their neighbours to join them in their attempts.

Mr Allport said younger trees needed more care, but established trees could do with a drink too if they started to show yellow leaves.
