16 October

Voting papers for the Nelson Park referendum will be distributed this week, starting on Wednesday 18 October.

A total of 50140 papers will be mailed out to Hastings electors, who have until noon on 9 November to say whether they support or oppose the sale of Nelson Park for a large format retail development.

Hastings electors are people registered on the parliamentary electoral roll and living in Hastings District, which extends north to Putorino and south to Te Aute.

Hastings District Council’s Electoral Officer, Peter Woodroffe, said a preliminary result would be announced as soon as possible after voting closed.

“The most important thing from Council’s perspective is for voters to have their say. This is a big decision for Hastings and a referendum is not something we undertake lightly, so I hope people will take the opportunity to make a difference.”

With distribution of voting papers starting on Wednesday 18 October, electors are urged to wait until at least Wednesday 25 October before contacting Council on 878 0500 if their papers have not arrived.

Hastings District Council is holding a public referendum to decide whether to sell Nelson Park and the adjoining part of Caroline Road for a large format retail development and to apply the net proceeds of the sale to:

1.      The establishment of a replacement all-weather athletics track, together with a 1000-seat covered grandstand and associated facilities, as part of a regional sports and recreation park on land owned by the Council in Percival Road; and,

2.      The purchase and development of public open space in the Hastings Central Business District (CBD) to the value of at least $3 million.
