Mayor pleased at early voting response

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says he is pleased with the early response to the Nelson Park referendum, with more than 10,000 papers returned in  the first three days  of voting.

“We’ve had more than a 20 percent response already, which is pretty good for this stage of the voting period. That’s likely to drop off after the initial rush and then pick up again as the voting period draws to a close,” Mr Yule said.

Votes must be mailed or delivered to Council before noon on 9 November 2006. Votes are only valid if received by Council before the closing time, so last-minute voters are advised to hand deliver their papers on the last two days.

Mr Yule encouraged all Hastings electors to have their say, whichever side they took on the issue.

“This decision is too important for anyone except Hastings as a whole to make, so the more votes we get back, the better and more accurate the result , ”  Mr Yule said.

Mr Yule’s own vote was among the 3,500 cast yesterday.
