: Top Chinese pianist opens NZ concerts at Opera House
5 October 2006
World-class pianist Sun Yingdi, winner of last year’s prestigious International Franz Liszt Piano Competition, is to perform his first New Zealand concert at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House on Saturday evening.
The 25-year-old pianist is part way through a world tour, and is to perform a series of concerts in New Zealand throughout October.
Hastings District Councillor Kevin Watkins, who helped arrange Yingdi’s Hastings performance, said he expected the concert to be a very special evening.
“It’s fantastic that we have a world-class venue to offer world-class performers, and even better that they are making use of it. By all accounts Yingdi is right up with the best in the world, so it is a bit of a coup for Hastings to get the first concert ahead of some of the larger centres.”
Mr Watkins said he hoped people would take the opportunity to see performers of Yingdi’s calibre, to show Hastings could produce audiences to match its facilities.
Tickets can be booked at the Opera House or online at www.ticketdirect.co.nz
