Hastings District Council will decide whether to investigate options for purchasing parts of Ocean Beach's Haupouri Flats for a reserve.

A structure plan for Ocean Beach was adopted by the Council on 31 May and Councillors will be asked to decide whether they want to explore options for an extended reserve at a meeting on Thursday 21 June.

Hastings District Mayor Lawrence Yule said detailed valuation advice pertaining to the Haupouri Flats was required before the Council and the community could make a decision about the area and its potential as a reserve.

“As part of the debate surrounding the structure plan it became clear a number of us wanted to see the Haupouri Flats area retained and protected from development. Other Councillors were unsure how this could be achieved because of the cost of purchasing the land and the lack of information on the likely price, now we need to look into the details so we know exactly what we’re dealing with in terms of investment,” said Mr Yule.

The Council will vote on whether or not to obtain valuation information, and to investigate designation and compulsory acquisition processes for the land identified for reserve in the Ocean Beach structure plan and the remainder of the Haupouri Flats.
