Have Your Say on Swimming Pools in Hastings District

Hastings District Council is preparing an Aquatic Facilities Strategy to plan for the future provision of public swimming pools in the District. Council is looking for your feedback through a questionnaire and series of public workshops.

The questionnaires can be filled out on-line or by picking up a hard copy from any of the public swimming pools, Council’s libraries and the main Council building (207 Lyndon Road East, Hastings).

Swells Hitting Haumoana Worst in 12 Years

Police have advised residents of 21 houses on Haumoana’s waterfront and houses at Ocean Beach to self-evacuate.

Hastings District Council has been monitoring high swells along the coast over the weekend but has now activated its Emergency Management Operations as the swells build.

Hikanui Drive - Chlorination

Residents of Hikanui Drive and surrounding areas are advised that Hastings District Council is temporarily chlorinating the water supply in the Tauroa water zone (see map) due to traces of bacteria detected during testing.

All bacteria has been suppressed and there is no health risk. Chlorination will temporarily remain in place over the next week or so as the installation of new backflow devices are being installed.

Coastal Residents Asked to Stay Away For Now

More than 200 people have self-evacuated to Haumoana School and authorities say they may need to stay away from the coast for as long as 12 hours.

Residents were asked to self-evacuate just before 9am this morning after tsunami alerts were sparked by an 8.8 Richter scale earthquake near Chile.

While the initial waves were small, the pattern from Chatham Island and Gisborne indicates that waves will grow in size over the next few hours.

Historically, the largest waves are seen at around six to 12 hours after the initial wave.

Stay Away From Beaches

Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence authorities are asking people to stay away from beaches until the threat of a tsunami hitting Hawke Bay passes.

At 8.25pm last night New Zealand time an 8.8 richter scale earthquake struck 90 kilometres from the coast of the Chilean city of Concepcion at a depth of 55 kilometres..

A wave of 2.34m was measured on the Chilean coast and New Zealand and Australia are now on a tsunami alert.

Coastal Community to Create Community Response Plan

Residents of Haumoana and Te Awanga have formed a working group to create a Community Response Plan for how to “Get Ready, Get Thru” in a civil defence emergency.

Around 60 Haumoana and Te Awanga residents attended a meeting at the Haumoana Pavilion last night to discuss public alert systems for the coastal community.

Early consultation for the Heretaunga Plains Urban Development Strategy shows there is a general consensus on the future of the region’s urban growth.

Napier City Council, Hastings District Council and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council are working together to design a plan for coordinated urban development across the Heretaunga Plains.

Hastings Emergency Management Operations centre is no longer on alert but is keeping a close eye on sea conditions leading up to the high tide at 1.20am tomorrow morning.

Residents of 21 houses at Haumoana and other houses at Ocean Beach have been told the risk has reduced enough for them to return home.

Police are currently evacuating 21 houses along the coast at Haumoana that may be vulnerable to high swells.

Hastings District Council has been monitoring high swells along the coast over the weekend but has now activated its Emergency Management Operations as the swells build.People along the wider coastline should self-evacuate if they think their houses are going to be affected by the swell.

Coastal Residents May Return Home But Advised to Play It Safe

Authorities now say the more than 200 people who self-evacuated to Haumoana School may return home but need to refrain from seaside activities and keep away from the lower reaches of the rivers. People should keep listening to the radio and television bulletins.

Coastal Communities Asked to Self-Evacuate

Hastings Civil Defence is advising coastal residents to self-evacuate and for people to stay away from beaches, as a tsunami of 20cm hits Hawke Bay.

The initial wave hit Hawke Bay at 9.17am but if the pattern at Chatham Island is repeated here there will be more waves and they will increase in size.

Police and the fire service have been door-knocking in the coastal communities of Te Awanga, Haumoana, Clifton and Whirinaki.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says someone will die if the prolific Pitbull breed is not brought under control.

A Hastings District Council officer was called to a property in Kilkee Tce, Flaxmere just after 11pm on Thursday night where a woman was trying to beat two pitbulls off her Rottweiler with a broomstick.

Community Asked for Pokie Machine Views

Hastings District residents are being asked how they feel about pokie machines in a survey that will help Hastings District Council review its gambling policy.

Hastings District currently has 369 pokie machines operating over 25 gambling venues, with a limit of 5.1 pokie machines per 1,000 people for the district.
