Dogs and their owners can both be relieved when they take a walk in Keirunga Gardens, with free doggy doo bags now available at the Tanner Street entrance.

This type of doogy doo bag dispenser will eventually be placed at all off-lead dog walking areas in the Hastings District.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says thousands of people visited the park last year and with an extremely hot summer forecasted it’s expected this number will grow.

“Over a period of three years we have seen a massive 59% growth in attendance figures and we are really excited about increasing this figure further this year. Splash Planet is New Zealand’s only water theme park and is a key tourism facility within Hawke’s Bay,” Mayor Yule says.

Hastings District Council and the Hastings Rose Society are hosting the annual Rose Sunday event at Frimley Park on Sunday, November 15.

The popular event attracts families and gardening enthusiasts from around the district.

Visitors can bring a picnic and relaxed on the lawn, while the jazz band plays in the background.

Hastings District Council is bringing together groups with an interest the district’s young people to discuss ways to unlock their potential and address anti-social behavior of at-risk youth.

Around two years ago, Council established the Hastings District Crime Prevention Governance Group, which included representatives from police, the Ministry of Justice, Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Education, the Department of Internal Affairs, Hawke’s Bay District Health Board, Child Youth and Family and Housing New Zealand.

The esteem in which the rangatira (chief) Te Hapuku is held has been restored, after his great-grandson alerted Hastings District Council that the street named in his honour was spelt incorrectly. Since 1900 the street, in Frimley, has been named Hapuka, not Hapuku.

The New Zealand Transport Agency, Police and Taupo and Hastings Civil Defence have decided to open State Highway Five.

Motorists have been waiting to get through since the Napier-Taupo Rd was closed at 3pm on Sunday.
Queues of vehicles on both sides of the closure are now being lead by police escort to prevent anxious motorists from driving dangerously through the area.

A second man charged with littering at Havelock North Cemetery has been found guilty and fined in Hastings District Court today.

Hastings District Council prosecuted Joshua Corey Burt, 19, and Carson Taylor Joe, 20, in July for dumping garden rubbish at Havelock North cemetery - the first time the Council had prosecuted under the Litter Act.
