Eight South African, four American and one Chilean are among thirty immigrants to gain citizenship to New Zealand in a ceremony to be held at the Hastings District Council.
The ceremony will be held on Tuesday 25th March 2008 at 7.00pm in the Council Chamber of the Council’s main administration building. There are 30 candidates who will officially become citizens of New Zealand that evening, made up of the following nationalities:
South African 8
British 1
Samoan 4
Indian 4
Hungarian 1
Zimbabwean 3
Thai 1
Chilean 1
Dutch American 1
American 4
Sri Lankan 2

Kaumatua, Mr Jim Whaanga will welcome those present on behalf of tangata whenua, with entertainment provided by the “Hastings Girl’s High School Choir”.
Mayor Lawrence Yule will present each candidate with a copy of “Spanish Mission, Styles of Five Decades” by Peter Shaw. Candidates will also receive a Kowhai tree grown at the Hastings District Council’s Nursery, to symbolise “putting down roots”.
Representation from the 7th Wellington (City of Wellington’s Own) and Hawke’s Bay Regiment will attend the Mayor.
