The Hawke's Bay Exhibition Centre will soon host a show of glass works curated by the Centre's own Kath Purchas.

Ms Purchas has individually selected works from the Wanganui group and her show “Cutting Edge:Wanganui Glass” runs from 3 February until 30 March. Exhibiton Centre director Maree Mills said the show will prove a favourite with the public.

“It’s free to see but be warned you may be wishing you had the credit card as some pieces are for sale,” said Ms Mills.

Wanganui’s thriving glass group developed through its strong association with the glass department at Wanganui UCOL. In 1987 the hot glass studio at the Wanganui Regional Community Polytechnic was opened and in 2007 Wanganui celebrated 20 years of glass art practice.

“This is no mean feat as the skill and expense the medium demands has seen the depletion of glass work tuition from tertiary providers across the country over the last two decades,” said Maree Mills.

In 2008, the community in Wanganui has made sure “the magic of glass making” endures as the Wanganui District Council establishes the new Wanganui Glass School.

“The exhibition Cutting Edge: Wanganui Glass is a testament to a group of dedicated artists drawn to this demanding medium and creating objects of beauty and desire,” said Ms Mills.
