The Hawke's Bay Exhibition Centre will host The Field Collection, a comprehensive collection of the works of Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947). The collection comes to Hastings from the Kapiti Coast where the ashes of Frances Hodgkins now rest.

Frances Hodgkins is one of New Zealand’s most historically significant painters. This collection spans three generations of her family. It includes paintings by her father William Mathew Hodgkins, a prolific collector of art, other members of the artistic family and their contemporaries.

Maree Mills, Exhibition Centre Director, said it was wonderful to see Hodgkins early works alongside the artist’s influences.

“It helps to see a snapshot of contemporary New Zealand in her lifetime and realise what an extraordinary life a woman artist had,” said Ms Mills.

Frances Hodgkins sister Elizabeth Field also painted, and evidence of their close relationship and mutual appreciation of art continued with nephew Peter Field. A sculpture of him travels with the collection as he was responsible for keeping this body work together for future generations to enjoy.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 5 April and runs until Sunday 15 June.
