Mayoral Challenge in tandem

12 February 2008

Riders in this year's Mayoral Challenge family bike ride will be led in 'tandem' by Mayor Lawrence Yule and Hastings District Council's new Chief Executive Ross McLeod.

The tandem bike has been borrowed from On Yer Bike Winery Tours for the one day event.

Mayor Lawrence Yule said he was happy to be sharing the task of leading cyclists through the city.

“This event is about having fun but it’s also about encouraging people to lead active lives. A big part of building a strong community is about getting people involved with what’s happening,” said Mr Yule.

This year’s family focused fun ride has the theme of the letter ’L’. It starts at 9.30am on Sunday 17th February from the Splash Planet Carpark.

The Mayoral Challenge is an annual event in which communities across New Zealand compete to get as many people riding behind their mayor as possible. It is held as part of the National Bikewise Week.

Last year 296 people rode behind Mayor Lawrence Yule.
