21 January 2008
The Hawke’s Bay Exhibition Centre is soon to open a new show of ceramic works by local artist Martin Poppelwell. The show runs from 27 January until 23 March.
Exhibition Centre Director Maree Mills said the show indicates the confident and mature practice of an experienced artist.
“It is great to have Martin Poppelwell back at the Centre in Hastings where his prolific work over the last few years can be seen in a chronological context. He is one of those rare artists who can blend vast intellectual interests with a solid understanding of his materials, not to mention he has a sense of humour that can find you laughing out loud,” said Ms Mills.
The Exhibition Centre has recently welcomed Maree Mills as its new director after the day-to-day management of the space was taken over by Hastings District Council in late 2007. Serviette is the first show to open under Mills’ directorship.
“We owe Martin Poppelwell the effort of a visit to his show. He has achieved a marrying of a fine arts education with a love for ceramics, paving the way for craft designers to break free of the functional object and truly explore their medium,” said Ms Mills.
Serviette showcases ceramic works produced by Poppelwell between 1993 and 2007. Another contemporary art show begins on 3 February at the Hawke’s Bay Exhibition Centre. Cutting Edge, a show from Wanganui Glass, will run until 30 March.
