Hastings People Asked to Help Decide on Brand

Hastings - help us find the Heart of Hawke’s Bay, asks Mayor of Hastings, Lawrence Yule.

“The council’s search for a brand has been narrowed down to two options and now we need your help to decide what imagery will represent us in a new initiative to promote the Hastings District,” Mayor Yule says.

Never let us forget…

“Never let us forget the great debt we still owe them...Let us go forward with faith in the future. Let us say to our fallen comrades, "We shall not fail or falter."

These were the words spoken by Mr Ron Giorgi, the then President of the Hastings RSA on Remembrance Day, 11 November 1956, at the ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone of the Hastings War Memorial Library. The Library celebrated 50 years as a war memorial on Sunday 18 October 2009.

Lumsden Road to show future of street design

A street makeover planned for Lumsden Road will extend to a brand new driveway for one lucky resident, when a project demonstrating the future of Hastings street design begins.

Lumsden Road and its footpaths are due for routine renewal, but after consultation with residents, Hastings District Council plans to do more than rebuild the existing road layout. The road will become a demonstration project for sustainable street design, showcasing methods and materials which make the road design better for residents, while requiring less maintenance.

Government, Council, Community and Youth Working Together

The Hastings District Council today launched its Growing Communities programme providing work opportunities for over 50 local unemployed youths.

The scheme, which is funded by the government’s Community Max initiative, offers youths six months’ work on a range of community projects helping them gain work experience and new skills.

Hastings District Supports Government's Rural Broadband Proposal

Hastings’ Mayor Lawrence Yule fully supports the Government rural broadband announcement which makes rural deployment of ultra-fast broadband to schools a priority.

"Our rural communities make a huge contribution to New Zealand’s economy and for a number of years we have sought prioritisation of high-speed broadband capability into the rural areas," Mayor Yule says.

Underage sale earns liquor licence suspension

A Hastings tavern will not be able to sell alcohol for twenty four hours after being caught selling to two underage purchasers earlier this year.

The Liquor Licensing Authority has suspended the On Licence of The Horse and Hound Café & Bar in Mayfair from 7.00 am on Thursday 24 September 2009 until 7.00 am the following day.

Council Decides Not To Appeal NAR Decision

In an informal discussion yesterday, Hastings District Councillors agreed unanimously not to fight the decision of independent commissioners to decline the Northern Arterial Route (NAR) designation.

This week independent commissioners declined the designation of the route based mainly on the effect on Maori-owned land and productive plains soils.

Frimley Park Coming Up Roses

Hastings District Council and the Hastings Rose Society are hosting the annual Rose Sunday event at Frimley Park on Sunday, November 15.

The popular event attracts families and gardening enthusiasts from around the district.

Visitors can bring a picnic and relaxed on the lawn, while the jazz band plays in the background.

Council Leads Community Drive For Realising Youth Potential

Hastings District Council is bringing together groups with an interest the district’s young people to discuss ways to unlock their potential and address anti-social behavior of at-risk youth.

Around two years ago, Council established the Hastings District Crime Prevention Governance Group, which included representatives from police, the Ministry of Justice, Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Education, the Department of Internal Affairs, Hawke’s Bay District Health Board, Child Youth and Family and Housing New Zealand.

Rangatira Honoured Correctly After More than 100 Years

The esteem in which the rangatira (chief) Te Hapuku is held has been restored, after his great-grandson alerted Hastings District Council that the street named in his honour was spelt incorrectly. Since 1900 the street, in Frimley, has been named Hapuka, not Hapuku.

Civil Defence Update: Napier-Taupo road reopened

The New Zealand Transport Agency, Police and Taupo and Hastings Civil Defence have decided to open State Highway Five.

Motorists have been waiting to get through since the Napier-Taupo Rd was closed at 3pm on Sunday.
Queues of vehicles on both sides of the closure are now being lead by police escort to prevent anxious motorists from driving dangerously through the area.

Second Guilty Verdict In Cemetery Littering Case

A second man charged with littering at Havelock North Cemetery has been found guilty and fined in Hastings District Court today.

Hastings District Council prosecuted Joshua Corey Burt, 19, and Carson Taylor Joe, 20, in July for dumping garden rubbish at Havelock North cemetery - the first time the Council had prosecuted under the Litter Act.

Tsunami Alert Cancelled

The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) issued a Tsunami Warning following the Samoa earthquake at 0648 this morning. This was subsequently downgraded to a Potential Threat Advisory and,after a maximum wave height of 80cm recorded at East Cape at 1pm today, has now been cancelled.

Community Gathers for Roys Hill Planting

Landmarks Trust members and Hastings District Council staff are rolling up their sleeves to turn the former Roys Hill landfill into a place locals and visitors alike can enjoy.

In 1954, Hastings Borough Council established the former quarry as a rubbish dump and in 1988 it was closed. Until 2000 hard fill was dumped on top to form an impermeable cap as a condition of its Hawke’s Bay Regional Council consent.
