Community Forum Focuses on Family Violence

Wednesday 27 May 2009

Hastings District Council is hosting organisations which act in the interest of at-risk families and children at its next Community Forum.

Anyone interested in community issues is welcome to attend the forum, held at HDC's Council Chamber on Friday, June 12, between 10am and 1pm.

Two organisations will be presenting at the forum - The Hastings Family Violence Inter-Agency Response Team and CPS - NZ's Child Protection Specialists.

The Hastings Family Violence Inter-Agency Response Team is made up of representatives from the NZ Police, Child Youth and Family, Community Probation and Psychological Services, Tangata Piringa Maori Women's Refuge, Hastings Women's Refuge and DOVE Hawke's Bay.

It is a collaborative group looking at the reported incidents of family violence with a view to assist at risk families.  The aim is to increase safety for victims of family violence and to hold offenders accountable for their actions. The group offers advocacy, support and education and, where possible and appropriate, ensures punitive measures are put in place for offenders.

CPS will discuss

  • How you can help reduce the risk of harm to children
  • The importance of a comprehensive child protection policy in your organisation and how to get one
  • Child abuse statistics & training options available through CPS

Community forums are aimed at those involved in, or working with, community organisations and the not-for-profit sector, but all members of the public are welcome to attend.

Those wishing to attend the forum should RSVP by Tuesday 9 June to Maria Norrelle by email marian@hdc.govt.nz or phone 871 5000.
