The New Zealand Transport Agency, Police and Taupo and Hastings Civil Defence have decided to open State Highway Five.
Motorists have been waiting to get through since the Napier-Taupo Rd was closed at 3pm on Sunday.
Queues of vehicles on both sides of the closure are now being lead by police escort to prevent anxious motorists from driving dangerously through the area.
Hastings District Council Civil Defence and Hawke’s Bay Police would like to thank all those people who acted sensibly throughout what has been a difficult time.
Hastings Civil Defence Controller, Mike Maguire would like to thank, in particular, Hukarere Girls College, Te Pohue Hotel, The Summit Kiosk, Hawke’s Bay Four-Wheel Drive Club, volunteers for Civil Defence, Red Cross, Salvation Army, volunteer rural fire forces, the police and all others who provided assistance.
The Napier-Taihape Road remains closed between Kuripapango and Taihape.
