Expo Aims to Get More "Littlies" Learning

Monday 08 February 2010

Mums, dads, pre-schoolers and parents-to-be from across the district are invited to attend the Camberley Early Childhood Expo: “Under 5’s: Know How, Can Do!”.

The expo will be held at the Camberley Community Centre, Kiwi Street, Camberley between 10.30am and 1.00pm on Saturday, February 13.

Councillor Henare O’Keefe, who will MC the event, says only about one-third of new entrants in Camberley had attended early childhood education.

“Many of those that did attend some form of early childhood education participated irregularly or for less than two weeks.

“Parents who have had a negative education experience may be reluctant to put their children through the same thing, but those early education experiences are the foundation of life-long learning.

“We need to break down the barriers for our parents so their children have the best start possible,” Cr O’Keefe says.
Attendees can learn more about early childhood education with information from playgroups, in-home learning, nga kohanga reo, kindergartens and more.

There are also FREE hearing and vision checks for pre-schoolers, sausages from the Tunutunu barbecue and healthy snacks from Child Interagency Network Group.

Hastings District Council is also providing FREE activities; librarians will be providing storytelling sessions and Sports Centre staff will run games in adjacent Kirkpatrick Park for school-aged children.

“This is a great opportunity to ask the hard-to-ask questions and learn the best ways to prepare your child for school,” Cr O’Keefe says.
