Council Open for Business During Construction

Thursday 08 July 2010

People wanting to do business with council - pay their rates, apply for a rates rebate, register their dog, get a building consent or pay a parking fine - still can, even though major construction is happening on the ground floor of Council’s Civic Building.

Preparations have begun for the construction of Council’s Customer Service Centre, with cashiers moving temporarily from the southern end of the floor to the Council Chamber foyer at the northern end.

Customer Service Project manager Mike Maguire says the successful construction company will be selected this week and all tenderers are aware the project will start immediately.

“We want to have the customer service centre open for business in October. We currently have staff training for their roles in the customer service centre and construction will start soon.

“Everything is lining up as planned to open the doors on a state-of-the-art one-stop-shop customer service centre in just a few months. It’s very exciting to see the project coming to fruition,” Mr Maguire.

All council’s ground floor customer facilities are still available in the chamber foyer and access to the second floor Building and Resource Consents team is still via the ground floor stairs or lifts.

Currently members of the public can still access ground floor reception via the main doors from the pedestrian access on Lyndon Rod.

However, in a few weeks access will be restricted to the carpark entrance at the rear of the building so construction can be carried out in the main reception area. Access to the second floor Building and Resource Consents team will still be via the ground floor stairs or lifts.

All changes to public access will be clearly sign posted.

“We appreciate that there will be some unavoidable disruption during construction but we will make every effort to make the transition as smooth as possible for people who visit us,” Mr Maguire says.
