Haumoana Houses Evacuated as Swell Builds

Monday 08 March 2010

Police are currently evacuating 21 houses along the coast at Haumoana that may be vulnerable to high swells.

Hastings District Council has been monitoring high swells along the coast over the weekend but has now activated its Emergency Management Operations as the swells build.

People along the wider coastline should self-evacuate if they think their houses are going to be effected by the swell.

Other beaches affected are Waipatiki, Whirinaki, Te Awanga, Clifton, Ocean Beach and Waimarama.

Senior Sergeant Ross Smith says public should stay off the beaches and away from low-lying waterways as wave surges are large and dangerous.

More information will be released if the situation changes.
