A survey conducted for the Hastings District Council shows 74.5% of residents regularly participate in kerbside recycling.

The survey was completed in September and October and involved 200 homes on each of the Flaxmere, Havelock North, Coastal Communities, Central and Urban Hastings recycling routes. A total of 1000 properties were surveyed each week over a five week period.

Hastings District Council is to launch the inaugural Youth Potential Awards.

The awards are designed to celebrate the achievement and success of young people in provider programmes with a focus on youth from the Flaxmere and Camberley communities.

The installation of Christmas trees and hanging baskets in Hastings CBD will ensure the festive season gets off to a colourful start.

Five Christmas trees are to be installed in the fountain in the CBD and will be illuminated at night. The trees will be complimented by the traditional lamp post decorations which have been refreshed with new tinsel and are set to be erected over the next couple of weeks.

Hastings will welcome 26 new New Zealanders at a citizenship ceremony to be held on Monday 28th, November 2011, from 6pm in the Hastings District Council Chamber, Lyndon Road, Hastings.

Hastings District Council and Settlement Support Hawke's Bay will again combine to show new residents the sites of the district.

Anyone new to New Zealand or kiwis new to the district are welcome to join the tour of Hastings and Havelock North, which will include a description of council services available throughout the region.

Flaxmere will honour some of its heroes, with the launch of the 2012 calendar at Te Aranga Marae this month.

The U-TURN Trust has identified a number of individuals and groups who have made great contributions to the Flaxmere community and has included a photo and a small story on each of them in the 'Flaxmere Heroes 2012 Calendar'.

Over 25 tonnes of hazardous waste was delivered at Hazmobile collection depots in Hastings and Napier over the weekend.

Residents gathered up their waste, including used engine oil, chemical sprays and part tins of paint and delivered it to the Hazmobile sites, from where it will be recycled or disposed of correctly.

Work is about to begin on a new children's playground for Queen's Square.

The slide was removed earlier this year for safety reasons and the rest of the existing playground equipment is to be removed, starting this Monday (November 21st).

Hastings District Council will go to design professionals in its search for the innovative ideas for the redevelopment of Civic Square.

Eleven broad themes have been identified for the central city project, which aim to further strengthen the existing services and experiences offered by the Hastings District Library and Hastings City Art Gallery.

Hastings residents are being urged to think about water use, as we head into what promises to be a long, hot and dry summer.

Water use in our urban and rural areas almost doubles during hot, sunny weather, which increases demand on our precious water resource.
