A new pathway and pavilion will become an added feature of the Frimley Rose gardens following the installation of a new stormwater infrastructure.

The new one meter pipe is required to take stormwater away from the Lyndhurst subdivision in Frimley and will connect with existing infrastructure in Lyndhurst Road. The route will take the underground pipe around the perimeter of Frimley Park and through part of the rose gardens.

Hastings District Council's search for innovative ideas for the redevelopment of Civic Square has sparked interest from the design community from around the world.

Over 130 registrations of interest have been received from design professionals, after they were offered the chance to enter the idea generation competition last month. Registrations have been received from practicing professional designers and students from New Zealand, Australia, Europe, the United States and Asia.

Author, Arthur Ransome will be the subject of a talk to be held at the Hastings War Memorial Library of Friday 13 January at 5.30pm. He wrote numerous children’s novels and was surrounded by rumours that he acted as a British spy during the Russian Revolution.

An upgrade of the children’s playground at Queens Square in Hastings has been completed ahead of the Christmas holidays.

Young Maori leaders from around the Hastings district are being encouraged to apply for a position which would see them receive guidance from the Mayor.

The national Mayoral Taskforce Rangatahi Leadership Programme chooses a leader between 18-25 years from the community who will be mentored for a year by Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule. The successful applicant will receive one-on-one mentoring from Mr Yule to help develop their leadership skills.

Feedback from the public has led to a number of changes to parking time limits near the Havelock North CBD.

The time limit for parking outside the library has been increased from 60 to 120 minutes after library staff indicated that users required more time to make their selections.

Adele Simmonds from Havelock North will have an easier way of carrying and accessing her favourite books after winning a Hastings District Libraries' competition.

Adele's name was drawn from the massive number of people who liked the libraries' Facebook page over the past three weeks and has won a Kobo e-Reader for her efforts.

The early results from Hastings District Council's annual cycle count have shown a significant increase in the number of riders since the Council's iWay initiative was launched.

iWay began in 2010 after council received $4.1m in funding from the New Zealand Transport Agency's model communities project. The aim being to increase the number of people who walk or cycle by making it easier and safer to ride or walk throughout Hastings. The initiative included the construction of on and off road cycleways and a promotion programme which encourages people to enjoy the great outdoors.
