A memorial
for stillborn babies buried at Hastings Cemetery is to be
unveiled today. Sexton Angus McKinlay said he received enquiries
every couple of months about what happened to stillborn babies
brought to the cemetery.

24 hour liquor ban takes effect
A large area
of central Hastings is about to come under a 24-hour liquor
ban, similar to the ban already in place in Havelock North.
That ban has also been extended to 24 hours a day, seven days

The future scope of Ocean Beach is a blank

as it becomes the focus of a “charrette” process.

Council to apply for $2.5m from
the Government
Opera House Redevelopment
The Government's announcement of a Significant Community-Based
Projects Fund is "exciting news" for Hastings, says Hastings
Mayor Lawrence Yule. Mr Yule, who is heading the community
fundraising for the $8.66-million upgrade of the Hawke's Bay
Opera House and precinct, says the Council will apply for
$2.5-million through the fund when applications open in October
this year.

Council purchases "Stoneycroft"
The iconic homestead “Stoneycroft” is part
of the social history of Hastings and should be preserved
that way, says Hastings District Council Chief Executive Murray
Gilbertson. Mr Gilbertson confirmed the Council has purchased
the 2.4-hectare property at 901 Omahu Road for $493,000, in
conjunction with its recently-confirmed Lyndhurst development.

"I want to update you about the Hastings New
Retail & Sports Complex Proposal which addresses the large
format retail issue and possible sale of Nelson Park.
Given the intense public interest over the issue, a decision
was made to hold a binding public referendum. The sale of
Nelson Park will only go ahead if the referendum, to be held
later this year, votes for such an action."

Hawke’s Bay is in an extreme fire danger
as land continues to dry out and temperatures soar. Hastings
District Council is urging people to be extra vigilant when

enjoying the Christmas period with his family and friends.
However, after the Asian tsunami struck on 26 December he
had a phone call which would change much of his holiday plans

Natural disasters
can strike at any time and while we watched the flood events
in the North Island last year which caused much devastation,
