Hastings welcomes 25 new citizens

Hastings will welcome 25 new New Zealanders at a citizenship ceremony to be held on Wednesday February 1st, 2012, from 6 pm in the Te Aranga Marae, 18 Boston Crescent, Flaxmere.

A Kaumatua will welcome those present on behalf of tangata whenua. Hastings District Council Councillors will present each candidate with a kowhai tree to symbolise “putting down roots”.

Diversity key to Hastings International Cultures Day

Organisers are again seeking a diverse range of performers and stall holders to enhance International Cultures day.

The event was first launched in 1999 by then Hastings Mayor Jeremy Dwyer and the New Zealand China Friendship Society for the Asia 2000 celebrations. Since 2003 it has become an annual event and a fixture on the Hastings events calendar. Over 5000 people flock to Cornwall Park for the event each year.

Hunt begins for new talent for Flaxmere Festival

The search is on for the next amazing talent to come from Flaxmere. The Flaxmere Planning Committee has begun the search for budding performers to audition for the third annual Flaxmere Family Festival.

Maori Television's cheeky host of the talent show Homai Te Pakipaki, Te Hamua Nikora, will join Flaxmere Councillor Henare O’Keefe as the MCs of the event.

Over a tonne of bottles is collected from public place recycling bins

Hastings’ public place recycling bins have diverted more than a tonne of waste from the Omaranui landfill.

Seven “Love NZ” bins were installed four months ago at a number of locations in the CBD, along the coastal cyclepath and at the effluent disposal points for campervans, just ahead of the Rugby World Cup.

Memorial service to mark 81 years since big quake

The massive earthquake which struck Hawke’s Bay on February 3rd 1931 is the single greatest natural disaster in the region’s recorded history. 93 lives were lost in Hastings, buildings collapsed, fires broke and roads were destroyed.

Tribute will again be paid to those who lost their life in the quake, at a memorial service to be held at the Hastings clock tower on Friday February 3rd.

Hastings iWay cycling projects make finals of CANS awards

Three Hastings District Council iWay walking and cycling projects have made the list of finalists in the Cycle Advocates Network, 2012 Cycle Friendly awards.

The iWay project began in 2010 when the Council beat off 22 challengers to win $4.1m from the Government's Model Communities project to promote walking and cycling initiatives around Hastings.

Rural fire officers are carefully watching the weather conditions as vegetation in Hawke's Bay continues to dry out and the fire risk increases.

Principal Rural Fire Officer, Don Scott said gale force winds up to 140 km/h are forecast over the next few days with temperatures reaching 30 degrees. These are the ideal conditions for fires to develop on rural properties around Hawke’s Bay.read more

Holiday reading has Hastings District Libraries staff at full stretch

Hastings District Libraries staff were at full stretch over the holiday period as residents used the break from work to catch up on their reading.

The libraries were closed on the statutory holidays over Christmas and opened again on Wednesday the 28th. On that day the libraries processed 3805 returns and issued 3854 books.

Further nominations sought for Hastings Civic Honours awards

Hastings District Council is continuing its search for nominees for the 2012 Civic Honours Awards.

The awards recognise an individual, group or organisation which has contributed significantly to Hastings District. In 2011 six individuals and two groups were presented with civic awards for their outstanding work in the community.

New pathway and pavilion to enhance Frimley Rose Gardens

A new pathway and pavilion will become an added feature of the Frimley Rose gardens following the installation of a new stormwater infrastructure.

The new one meter pipe is required to take stormwater away from the Lyndhurst subdivision in Frimley and will connect with existing infrastructure in Lyndhurst Road. The route will take the underground pipe around the perimeter of Frimley Park and through part of the rose gardens.
