Watering restrictions implemented in Hastings District

Second level water restrictions have been put in place in the Hastings District.

From this morning (Tuesday 13th January 2015), the use of hoses and sprinklers for watering lawns and gardens will only be allowed between the hours of 6am and 8am and 7pm and 9pm each day.

The restrictions have been implemented as the water level falls in local rivers and streams along with a noticeable increase in daily urban useage across all public water supply areas.

Councillor Tania Kerr says “While Council is pleased with the restraint being shown by residents around the district in the use of water, it has become evident in the past few weeks that useage continues to rise and is running at the limit imposed in our water consent.”

Tania Kerr says “The recent spell of hot weather has put our waterways under pressure. Watering only during the early morning and later in the evening will help minimise wastage, save water during the hottest part of the day and ensure plants and lawns get the greatest value from the irrigation (in the cooler part of the day).”

Tania Kerr says “If all residents abide by these simple watering rules, there is every chance that we will get through the rest of summer without the need for any further restrictions.”

“The restrictions will ensure that water use in the urban area is consistent with restrictions which are imposed on water users in other parts of the district. Savings can be achieved by making small changes to the way we all use water around our homes,” Tania Kerr says.

“Gardens are one of the main areas where water can be wasted if we are not careful about how we use it. Hand-held watering attachments are more efficient than sprinklers, as water can be directed just where it is needed.”
