Fireworks safety for pets

Take special care of your pets this week - especially over the coming weekend. It is that time of the year when special care needs to be taken of animals - Guy Fawke's Night.

A dog’s hearing is much more acute than a humans and the loud explosions and high pitched scream of fireworks can cause considerable stress.

There are some simple rules to keep your animals calm and happy: Don’t let-off fireworks close to or around any animals; keep the curtains closed and keep your pets busy; someone should stay at home on the nights when fireworks are most likely to be let off to keep them company; keep gates and windows closed.

But don’t over comfort them or you risk rewarding and enforcing anxious behaviour.

Sometimes animals get very frightened and manage to run away. To ensure they can be returned to you easily make sure it can be identified (registration tag, microchip or some form of identification). If your pet goes missing contact Council on 8715000
