Public workshop seeks ideas for Flaxmere Community Centre

Flaxmere Community web

The public is encouraged to attend the workshop and share their vision for the Flaxmere Community Centre, library and pool complex

The Flaxmere Community Centre, library and pool complex sit at the heart of the Hastings suburb, and an upcoming workshop will give people the opportunity to share their ideas for the future of these facilities.

In 2012 the Hastings District Council spent $2million upgrading the community centre and library, and is now looking at how the centre and surrounding area could be improved even further to best serve the community.

Potential options, including building one or more full-size basketball courts that could connect the Community Centre, library and the swimming pool together to form one united facility, have already been put forward following a survey of local youth.

Other suggestions have included making the centre more of a community hub, with other social and community services being offered there.

Now the council is seeking the wider public’s ideas and aspirations.

Flaxmere councillor Jacoby Poulain said the centre had been operating well over the last few years, however, there were still some groups such as basketball users who wanted to use the centre more but couldn’t because of its limited court size.

“We also have growing demand for the use of computers and technology, so our library space needs to be looked at.

“Flaxmere has grown over the years so this project is looking at how we best develop our facilities to cater for that growth.”

She said the council supported developing the outside green space area between the Community Centre and the shopping centre into a more community and youth-friendly space.

“Concepts have included a performance stage and could include playground features.”

The upcoming Pāharakeke – Weaving a Brighter Future Together workshop will be an open forum for the community to expand on these ideas and share others.

It will be followed by a more formal, wider consultation process, planned to take place before the end of this year.

“I am excited to see the centre being further developed for our community,” said Ms Poulain.

All are welcome to attend the workshop that will be held at the Flaxmere Community Centre on Saturday, October 27 from 11am to 2pm.
