Obstacle race comes to the city

Albert Square in Hastings will reverberate to the sound of laughter this Sunday, as the Aspyre Urban Obstacle race comes to the city.

The inaugural event will see participants go under things, over things, jump, balance and carry things, climb over hay bales and they may even have water balloons thrown at them.

Organiser Jamie Loughran says “Urban obstacle races have become very popular around New Zealand, but they mostly confined to country areas. I thought it would be great to bring the same concept to the central city.”

Jamie Loughran says “The course should take around 15 minutes to complete and can be run at any pace that’s good for you. It is suitable for individuals or teams and is something that will challenge people to get off the couch and into some exercise.”

For health and safety reasons, only those over 15 years are able to enter, but the race will benefit a younger group, as all proceeds go to the KidsCan Charitable Trust.

“100% of all money raised will go to our local kids,” Jamie said. “Kids are the future of the country and KidsCan supports thousands of kiwi kids. It’s their mission to provide food, clothing and basic healthcare in schools to enable disadvantaged children to reach their full potential.”

The Aspyre Urban Obstacle race starts at 11am on Sunday 24 January 2016 in Albert Square, Heretaunga Street East, Hastings. Racing numbers can be obtained from Aspyre Fitness reception up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the event.
